Milpitas, CA (March 19, 2001) DISC®, Inc. (NASDAQ: DCSR),
a leading manufacturer of nearline storage solutions, today announced
plans to integrate Sony Corporations forthcoming Ultra Density Optical
(UDO) format within its enterprise storage libraries, with product availability
expected in the second half of 2002.
DISC plans to integrate the new generation drives, currently in development
at Sony, into its nearline storage solutions. The initial 40 GB per cartridge
capacity for the technology, achieved through the use of violet laser
and advanced optics, will be available in both rewriteable and WORM (write
once, read many) formats. Customers who currently own or plan to purchase
DISCs 5.25-inch optical libraries can take advantage of the increased
storage capacity of the libraries when combined with the new UDO technology.
Reliability, data availability and cost per megabyte are the driving
factors when designing todays storage systems, said Bob Riland,
VP, Marketing and Sales. When Sony delivers on the promise of UDO
Technology, DISC will be able to deliver nearline storage systems for
as little as half a cent per megabyte. The UDO product road map will allow
us to continue offering storage devices at a fraction of the cost of RAID.
Automated storage systems from DISC are known for features such as random
access, high data availability rate, quick transfer rates, large capacity
and long-term reliability. The advent of UDO technology will allow DISC
to continue to provide its current and future customers with leading edge
storage solutions in both nearline and data archival environments.
